Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Drive-By Truckers?

My wife is a Tom Petty fan and has been for some time. We're making the short trip to Noblesville this Saturday to catch him and the Heartbreakers on their current tour.

The opening act is the Drive-By Truckers of whom I know very, very little. I've listened to a few tunes of theirs over the past week and see that a number of shows are available for dl at bt.etree but I have no clue where to start.

Who here knows more than I and can get me pointed in the right direction?

DBT are great. Might be easier to browse through the shows here at the archive before downloading the torrents.

Try this show on. Then listen to a few of the AUDs from their recent tour.

I started with their Decoration Day album kinda of dark but some really good songs on there and they hooked me, my bro saw them open for the crowes and said they were good too, so start there and enjoy Petty! Have not checked out any live stuff but I believe they are on LMA!

if you like hard driving rock and roll with a healthy dose of profanity for profanity's sake...you'll love DBT

If you like kinda hard-edged Southern rock, the Truckers are for you. Not really hard rock; the accent is on Southern. They make no bones about Lynyrd Skynyrd being their heroes. Plenty of live stuff in the archive to listen to. Some of the available recordings have the vocals mixed a bit too low for my taste, though.

Patterson Hood of DBT is a good songwriter. It's not only the genuine southern sound but also the smarts that make him a favorite. His solo show from Asheville highlighted on the LMA is a good show. The DBT website includes some lyrics and history. I had to get past the blustery loud to hear what he was saying, but they are the real deal.

Let me know how they played! A few years back my niece, who went to school with a couple of Truckers in Alabama, turned me on to them. I don't collect their live stuff, but the albums "Southern Rock Opera", and "The Dirty South" sealed the deal for me. A great rock 'n roll band with anywhere from two to three excellent songwriters in the band. I have all of the albums, and although there are some hits and misses, on the whole I like and admire their songwriting.
